On the invitation of His Majesty Muhammed VI of Morocco, a delegation of 21 Muslim elders from The Gambia recently took part a conference in the Rabat, Morocco.
The forum was attended by participants from 41 countries across the world with majority of the participants drawn from the Tijaniya sect with the discussions centering on Sheikh Ahmed Tijan who is said to have created the Tarikha Tijaniya as well as to see how best the followers of the Tijaniya brotherhood could know and support each other.
According to Imam Tafsir Gaye of Banjul, who was also among the Gambian delegation, the forum was also used to discuss the issue of unscrupulous people who use Islam to create crime.
Ahmed Banding Drammeh, President of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, spoke on behalf of the Gambian delegation.
He extended President Jammeh’s greetings to His Majesty, the King of Morocco and the Moroccan people.
The SIC president expressed gratitude to Moroccan king for inviting them to such a forum. He thanked the Moroccan Ambassador in Dakar, who also represents the king in The Gambia, H.E. Muhau Ouli Tagma, and his staff for making the trip successful.
It could be recalled that in 1986, a similar forum was organised in Morocco and Imam Tafsir Gaye alongside the late Imam Ablie Jobe attended it under the invitation of late King Hassan II.
