Wednesday, December 6, 2006
The two major revenue collecting agencies of The Gambia goverment, namely the Income Tax Department and Customs and Excise Department, have made a record collection of D240,839,686.64 in the month of November alone.

According to sources, Customs alone collected D145,308,672.54, while Income Tax collected D95,531,014.10 bringing the whole total to over D240M. This collection, according to sources is impressive and will impact positively on the country’s tax oriented economy.

This amount represents a significant improvement compared to that of last year’s November collection. Last year’s November figures stood at over D106M for Customs and over 64M for Income Tax.

The performance of this two major revenue agencies will provide a good start for the newly established Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) which was established by an Act of the National Assembly in 2004.
The purpose of the move by the goverment is to maximise revenue earnings by bringing both Customs and Income Tax under one umbrella body, the GRA which is to start full operations by the beginning of the new year.
