US anti-corruption expert ends visit![]() Thursday, September 21, 2006 Mr Robert Smolik, Diplomat in Residence at the University of Michigan in US, has conducted a successful two-day anti-corruption programme in The Gambia.
Prior to assuming his current position at the University of Michigan, Mr Smolik served as the US Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, where he managed a team from several US agencies working on issues, including anti-corruption, counter-terrorism financing, trade, investment, and education.
His visit to The Gambia was the last stop on an anti-corruption speaking tour of six East and West African countries. According to the US Embassy, the purpose of Mr Smolik’s visit was to discuss the effects of social and economic development, thereby encourage stakeholders to explore creative ways to combat corruption. During his stay, Mr Smolik’s led a panel discussion on anti-corruption at TANGO Headquarters in Kanifing, and then met with government officials, the media, and representatives of the Gambia Bar Association, as well as the business community.
