Members of Young People in the Media The Gambia (YPMG) have returned from the 5th World Summit on Media for Children (5th WSMC) and the UNICEF One-Minute Workshop which were held in Sandton City, Johannesburg, South Africa, from March 19-28, 2007.
The theme of the summit was Media as a Tool for People and Democracy.
Speaking to this reporter at the weekend after their arrival last week, Abdou Jatta, the President of the YPMG, said the world summit takes place every three years.
“This year, the underlying goals and objectives are in line with the objectives of the World Summit Foundation on Media for Children and the United Nations Millennium Declaration,” he said.
He added that the UNICEF one-minute workshop gave the participants the opportunity to write, film, edit and produce one-minute video clips.
He noted that a broad range of themes and issues including young people’s right to express themselves, the role of the Internet in teenagers’ lives was dealt with.
“The Gambia delegation produced two one-minute films entitled Media Waves and Article 17 and both of the films focus on children’s right to freedom of expression,” he said.
