Dr Lamin Nafa Saho, a one time Minister of Information and Tourism, in the erstwhile PPP regime, has passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning in the United Kingdom, where he has been living for the past years.
According to reports reaching the Daily Observer, Dr Saho’s died after a brief illness.
Dr Saho, a native of Salikenni, Central Baddibu, joined active politics in 1977, and stood as an Independent candidate against Sherriff Mustapha Dibba in the then parliamentary elections for the Central Baddibu Constitiuency, but was unable to win. In 1982, Dr Saho was again picked to contest under the PPP ticket in the Parliamentry elections against Sherriff Dibba of the NCP and subsequently won. He was re-elected in 1987, under the PPP ticket and eventually appointed as Minister of Information and Tourism, the post he held until1990, when he was replaced by Alkali James Gaye.
He, however, maintained his Parliamentry seat for the Central Baddibu seat till 1992 Parliamentary elections when he lost to Sherriff Dibba of the NCP.
After that, Dr Saho engaged himself in business and established the Atlantic Airlines, and served as its Executive Director.
In 2001, he joined the APRC and played an important role in that year’s By-election campaign against the UDP in the Central Baddibu Constituency, which was narrowly retained by the UDP. In the Presidential elections of the same year, he served as a member of the APRC Campaign Committee of the North Bank Region.
His body, according to family sources, will be flown to The Gambia soon and will be buried in his home village of Salikenni, Central Baddibu.
He is survived by two wives and children.
