Gambians in US set for ‘All Nations’ football fiesta

The Gambia has been drawn against Djibouti, Spain and Australia as annual All Nations football carnival, that is organised by the foreign nationals residing in Seattle, USA, comes underway.

The draw  for the annual tournament which will kick off from July 13, was made at a sports bar in downtown Seattle over the weekend with the presence of the various team representatives.

The tournament brings together teams formed by nationals of different countries leaving in the Seattle. This is the fifth edition and a record number of forty nations have registered for this year’s championship that aims to promote understanding and appreciation of other people’s culture through soccer.

The championship was first staged in 2003 with only twelve nations participating. The tournament has grown in stature, hence attracted the Washington State Soccer Association that will coordinate this year’s fiesta which will be covered by all the major newspapers and TV stations in Seattle.

The Gambian team has always dropped at the quarter-final in the previous competitions and the team is confident, adding more to that success.

The team has already embarked on friendly matches as a build-up to the tournament intensifies. The Gambia beat England 3-1 in their first friendly game before sharing points with Liberia. On Sunday, the Gambian team will take on Ethiopia in another friendly.
