As Real, GPA, Wallidan Chase the Title
The 2006/07 Gambia Football Association Division one league Champions would be finally known on Sunday June 24, 2007 after week 18, which would also mark the end of this year’s league.
To avoid any match fixing, The Gambia Football Association has decided to schedule all the five remaining matches at the same time in different venues.
At the Independence Stadium, the current league leaders, Real De Banjul with 32 points, would face a though encounter against league strugglers, Bakau United at 15 points.
A victory for Real would see them clinching the title they last won in 2000 meaning that Bakau United would be relegated to the lower league.
At the Serekunda West Mini Stadium, another league title aspirant, Wallidan FC with 30 points would also battle it with Armed Forces at 23 points.
A victory for the Blue Boys of Wallidan and a defeat for Real De Banjul and GPA would give them a league title.
But the game would not be easy, as the Army Boys would be playing for pride.
The 2006 champions, GPA with 31 points would be looking to retain their title on Sunday against Gamtel at 29 points at the Banjul Mini Stadium. But they could only achieve that if they beat the Telecommunications boys and hope Real De Banjul loose against Bakau United the same day.
As three teams are fighting for the title, four Bakau teams are also fighting from the relegation zone. They are: bottom placed Seaview, Bakau United, Steve Biko and Africell/ Sait Matty.
The must-awaited battle at the relegation spot would oppose Seaview and Steve Biko at the Box Bar Mini Stadium in Brikama.
A victory for Steve Biko would safe them from relegation with 18 points while Seaview at 13 points, would return to the second division just one year after their promotion to top league.
The last game of this year’s first division league would be played between Africell/ Sait Matty and the 2006 FA Cup winners, Hawks FC, who has a poor season despite a good performance in the CAF Confederation cup where they eliminated FC Deguele of Ivory Coast in the preliminaries before loosing honorably against Dolphins of Nigeria.
A victory for both Steve Biko and Bakau United would see new comers Seaview and Africell/ Sait Matty back to the second Division.
