Jarra Central Chief’s Sacking

In less than two months in office as the head chief of Jarra Central, Mr. Momodou Ceesay has reportedly been terminated and replaced by the former holder of the position, Chief Haruna Sabally of Sitahuma village.

Momodou Ceesay, a native of Jarra Jappeni, was the ruling APRC candidate in the last National Assembly elections but lost to the candidate of the opposition United Democratic Party following a fierce contest.
Our sources informed this paper that Mr. Ceesay’s recent inauguration ceremony was marked by a lot of fanfare and jubilation, followed by a feast that accounted for a number of cattle slaughtered for the occasion.
The reason for his sacking remains something of a mystery up to the time of writing this story.

In an effort to ascertain the veracity of the story, this paper yesterday evening contacted the Governor of Lower River Region, Modou Soma Jobe. However Governor Jobe refused to comment on the development, referring this reporter to the Permanent Secretary of Local Government and Lands. “In fact I’m away from my office and you are closer to Banjul. Why not contact the PS for Local Government,” Governor Jobe told this reporter on the phone.

Meanwhile according to political analysts, Seyfo Haruna Sabally is said to be the longest serving elected chief in The Gambia.

Some residents of Jappeni who spoke to this paper under anonymity expressed shock over the removal of Chief Ceesay.
