Family Seeks Assistance for Live Saving SurgeryWednesday, June 11, 2008
According to a medical report prepared by medical staff at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, the baby of Mariama Jallow from Finchu Alhagie has congenital oesophageal atresia. The child is five days old and in urgent need of medical treatment. Doctor s say the congenital defect is extremely serious and that the only treatment is surgical, which must be carried out as soon as possible for the baby to survive. The treatment is only available in Dakar Senegal as there is no service in The Gambia If the surgery is carried out doctors have told The Point that the prognosis for the child is excellent but that time is of the essence in terms of receiving the treatment. The procedure is very expensive and the family are seeking financial aid from donors, philanthropists, NGO’s and Government to help pay for the live saving surgery.
