Monday, March 02, 2009

As part of their contribution to the health delivery system in the country, African Solidarity for Action last Wednesday donated medical items to four health centres and a hospital in the country.

The health centres which benefited from this donation include Serrekunda, Somita in Foni Berefet, Jahally in Central River Region, Demba Kunda in Upper River Region and Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the organisation’s head office along

Kairaba Avenue
, Mr. Sainey Jarju, the director of African Solidarity for Action (ASFA), said that this is the second presentation of medical items made by his organisation. He said the first one was a consignment of drugs which was presented to Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital .

“It was on December 24th, 2008 when an NGO called Association Attaf Girona of Catalonia in Spain donated 1,958 antibiotic drugs to our organisation to give it out to the people of The Gambia free of charge,” he revealed.

Speaking earlier, the coordinator of ASFA, Mr. Adama Mbye, explained that this donation is a goodwill gesture from the organisation to the Gambian people.

ASFA, according to Mbye, was formed in July 2006 by a few young Gambians who were concerned about poverty, marginalisation, war and poverty in Africa .

“ASFA is a non-profit entity working towards eradicating poverty in Africa ,” he added.

The issue of illegal migration was also given prominence in Mr. Mbye’s speech. He urged youths to desist from illegal migration.

Mr. Mbye revealed that ASFA intends to create job opportunities in The Gambia, especially for the youth, through a programme called ‘Investing in The Gambia’.

“We have the honour and pleasure to inform you that ASFA is working hand in hand with three Spanish companies in the areas of agro-industries project, construction and estate development just to empower our young people to contribute to the development of the country”.

For her part, Haddy Sanyang, officer in-charge Serrekunda Health Centre, thanked the donor for the gesture.

She considered the items as one of the most important necessities for human beings.

Sanyang promised that the donated items would be put to good use.
