The people of Bakau last Sunday embarked on a massive cleansing exercise on the main road leading from Bakau New Town to the Independence Stadium through the Coastal Road.

The cleansing exercise was organised by Ainaw Badjie Foundation in collaboration with “Nyodema Kafoo” and other community based organisations in Bakau. The exercise brought together distiguished personalities from within and outside Bakau, such as Hon. Kalifa Jammeh, NAM for Bakau; Mayor Yankuba Colley of KMC; and Aja Fatou Nyamballow, lady councillor.

Omar Badjie, coordinator of the Ainaw Badjie Foundation, told this reporter that the foundation was established in 2008 to complement the government’s efforts to provide a clean environment, education and improve agriculture in the country. According to him, the cleansing exercise was part of the Operation Clean the Nation initiated by the Gambian leader and the independence stadium was chosen because it is a national stadium which is frequently visited by people for national and international programmes. Kebba Jobe, adviser of the foundation, emphasised the importance the foundation attaches to the health, agricultural and education sectors of the country.

Kalifa Jammeh, National Assembly member for Bakau, described the exercise as very important and timely. According to him, the management and staff of the stadium as well as the KMC, cannot do everything alone and therefore, need the support of all in such endeavours.
