Armed men strike in Tallinding

africa » gambia
Thursday, November 27, 2008
One Jere Marong, a young man in his late 20s, visited the offices of the Daily Observer, last evening, alleging to have been attacked by a group of five heavily armed men, at the early hours of the morning.

Marong narrated that the incident took place at the gate of his house in Fakaliya Street, Tallinding. A car dealer, the young man appeared visibly worried about his safety. He said it was around 3.00 am when he had just driven back from Senegambia. Upon reaching his house, he alighted from his car and opened the gate to his compound to get his car packed.

According to him, as he turned round to re-enter the car, a man emerged and ordered him to stop. When he demanded for his reason, he said, the man who looked very fierce and mean replied: “if you don’t stop I will kill you.”  Jerreh was about to speak when a group of four men appeared with cutlasses and other weapons looking like guns, and demanded for money.

Jerreh explained further that one of the men deeped      his hands into his pocket and took away his 700 euros. Another man, he said, ransacked the car and carted away the amount of D5600 (in D50 denomination), which belongs to his mother.

He said that the five armed men, before abandoning him, promised Jerreh Marong of a possible attack,   saying; ‘“in fact, you are lucky that you are still alive; next time if we come back and you argue with us, it will be the end of your life, because we are coming back for you soon.”

He said that the five unknown armed men boarded a white car that had been parked about a few meters away from his house and drove off before he could shout for help.

He stated that prior to this incident he had sometime, in the month of October, twice received series of calls made through a private number from unknown persons. The callers requested his assistant and involvement in an unknown business.

Also about four days before this latest incidence, he said he received a similar call from some unknown people again.
The matter was later reported to the Bundung Police station, later last evening.
