As Concerns Raised Over Salary Reduction

The dust surrounding the Brikama Area Council (BAC) seems yet to be clear, following concerns raised by cleansing service workers over what they described as a drastic reduction in their salaries.

This comes hot on the heels of recent media reports that unearthed an alleged financial misappropriation of over D54m at the council, which it stated, had since 2004 threatened the very foundation of the Brikama Area Council.

According to some cleansing service workers who spoke to this reporter, the workers were previously receiving D1, 552.50 per month only to be told that their salaries are being reduced to D1, 100.

“This has seen a drastic reduction of up to D452 in our salary, which is really not encouraging at all, considering the nature of work we are rendering to the society”, an unnamed worker told our reporter.

“The reduction in salaries has really affected us because we are all family men who depend on salaries for the upkeep of the family”, another worker said, while appealing to the authorities to look into the matter with seriousness so as to come up with a lasting solution.

When contacted the Chief Executive Officer of BAC, Momodou Jallow confirmed the veracity of the story. But he was quick to say that it emanated from an auditing exercise, conducted by the Personnel Management Office.

“As a result of the auditing, some workers are affected due to certain irregularities,” he concluded.
