Donkey Thieves Gets Custodian SentenceMonday, September 07, 2009
Saidou Leigh and Bamba Joof were recently convicted and sentenced to four months in prison, with hard labour by Magistrate Fred Foster of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court for stealing a donkey and its cart. They were also ordered to pay a compensation of D2000 to the complainant, Omar Touray, in default to serve three months in prison and to also pay another compensation of D2250 to Modou Secka, in default to serve a further three months in prison. According to the facts of the case as narrated by the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Colley, it happened on 15th August 2009 at Brikama Gidda. He said the complainant Omar Touray tied his donkey and the cart at his home only to wake up to the horrors that they were nowhere to be seen. As he stated, the complainant then suspected that the donkey must have been stolen and accordingly reported the matter to the Brikama Police Station. He adduced that the complainant was informed by his son that he suspected the two accused persons, simply because they had left for Casamance. He said when the accused persons returned from Casamance, the complainant confronted them with the issue and they confessed doing it. He said the accused persons were later arrested and during the interrogation they confessed to the police that they had stolen it and took them to Cassamance, where they bartered it with cannabis.
