Editorial,
Once again, President Jammeh has manifested his continued resolve to transform The Gambia into a country that will serve as a role model for the entire continent. The acquisition of two new generators for the increasingly demanding energy sector could not have come at a better time. Problems of electricity supply are becoming history in this country. While most people in the country nowadays experience a 24-hour electricity supply, with a drastic increase in the number of street lights, it remains of importance that we strive towards consolidating and strengthening what we have. These additional generators for NAWEC will therefore help in ensuring sustainability of the many development projects the country is realizing now. More importantly, the coming of the new generators will boost the ongoing rural electrification project which is at the heart of the president’s major programs. Energy is a fundamental tool for growth and development. In this age of science and technology, people depend on electricity in almost all aspects of our lives. This gesture of the president will not only boost the living standards of the people, but will also go a long way in attracting foreign direct investment in the country. For the better the electricity supply in a country, the more willing potential entrepreneurs will be to invest in the country. This can enhance greater job opportunities particularly for the youth; thus reducing the mass dependency ratio. The National Waterand Electricity Company should however endeavor to utilize the generators in a manner that will allow for sustainability and the service should also be affordable so that even the less privileged can benefit. It is clear that the ambition of President Jammeh is to transform The Gambia into a financial heaven, and a tourist paradise where the standard of living will not only be high but the development process will come from within, hence participatory.
