Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Journalists from about nine West African countries, namely: Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Benin, Senegal and Mali, are currently networking to promote peace building in the sub-region.

Named as ‘West African Network of Journalists for Peace Building’ (WANJOP) it was formed recently in Accra, Ghana on the 11th May 2009.

According to a press release, the aims of the network include, but not limited to trying to promote and advocate peace and stability in the West Africa sub-region, which according to the network, has had its fair share of conflicts through media.

The network elected Mr. Nfamara Jawneh of The Gambia as Regional President, Ms. Zibilila Daouda Nadietou of Togo as Vice-President. Ms. Ama Achiaa Amankwa of Ghana was elected as Secretary General, Mr. Amadou Ba of Senegal as Assistant Secretary General and Mr. Abdou Karimou Maiga of Mali as Financial Secretary.

Meanwhile the network has called all and sundry, particularly journalists who desire to promote peace in the region to join them.

“The co-operation and support of all member states is highly solicited,” the release stated.

Meanwhile Modou Sanyang was also elected as a national co-ordinator.
