Former Gambian Speaker of Parliament in the PPP Administration, Momodou Baboucarr Njie, commonly known as Njie (BP), yesterday departed this world at his

Kairaba Avenue
residence.

The late Mr Njie, age 80, is survived by two wives and several children. When the news of Njie BP’s demise broke yesterday, hundreds of Gambians thronged his house to console and sympathize with the bereaved family.

Speaking to ‘The Point at the deceased’s residence last evening, Omar Amadou Jallow alias OJ, who also served in the PPP government, said the late Mr Njie contributed immensely to the socio-economic and political development of this country. “He was one of the first Gambians to hold a senior managerial position in the then CFAO as Managing Director. He also worked tirelessly with the British Petroleum whence he was nicknamed Njie BP. As an ardent Muslim, OJ went on, Mr Njie contributed his quota towards the Islamic religion. He has also contributed to the development of youth and sports and at one time appointed chairman of the Youth Festival, now called Nayconf.

According to OJ, the late Mr Njie also served as Speaker of the House of Parliament for a period of ten good years.

Alhagie AA Faal, chairman of the Banjul Muslim elders described the demise of Njie-BP as a great loss to the country, as he had contributed towards our national development, and Islam in particular. He was a member of the Banjul Muslim elders, Faal said.

Mr Kaba MA Jallow said that the late Mr Njie was a farmer with exemplary character who has ventured successfully into orchard farming. Messrs OB Conateh and Omar Ndow all described the late Mr Njie as hardworking, diligent and a devoted Muslim.

The late Mr Njie will be laid to rest at the OldJeshwangCemetery at 11 0’clock this morning.
