Karate Championship Kicks Off Today

The opening of the first ever Karate Championship named after the founding father of Karate in The Gambia, Sensei (Master) Muhammed Kaba Musa will take place later today at the Wellingara Cinema hall.

The two-day championship, organised by The Gambia Sotokan Karate-Do International (SKI) Association, is meant to revive participation in Karate in the country.

Initiated by one of the longest serving female black belt holders in The Gambia, Sensei Sally Secka; in collaboration with one of the biggest Martial arts suppliers in Australia, Sports Master Athletics International- SMAI, the opening will include internal weighings and preliminaries today.

The championship proper will take place tomorrow at 4:00pm and in order to ensure a free and fair contest, the Senegalese Shotokan Karat –Do International Association is set to provide officials for the two-day event.

The competition, aims to compliment the efforts of the founding father of Karate in The Gambia, who has trained numerous black belt holders and established over 15 clubs, to show the general public that SKI has initiated a new championship that would be also added to the plans of actions for both The Gambia Karate Federation and the SKI Gambia Association.

The championship, which will be staged on an annual basis, will make room for the Karate technical committee to scout for young talented youths and prepare them for major African and world Karate competitions.
