Sheikh Njie of the Gambia National Draughts association is confident that he is not afraid of any draughts player in the world and that no grand master can beat him or stand in his way in the forth-coming draughts world cup in Brazil in September.

‘I have full confidence in myself and more importantly, I have the full backing from the National Sports Council and the Gambian leader President Jammeh’ , Mr Njie was quoted as saying by the Pointsport shortly after meeting the National Sports Council at the Independence Stadium on Tuesday.

He however remained confident of claiming his first ever world Draughts championship title if the collective and concentrated efforts are put in place.

‘I need the support of every Gambian in order to keep up the fighting spirit that I have put up during the recently concluded African Draughts confederation and the draughts world cup qualifiers in Banjul, the ambitious Sheikh Njie told our reporter.

The Gambia’s only representative in Brazil outlined some of the challenges he endured during the ten day Draughts championship.

‘I was definitely lacking confidence and the belief that I was going to make it because it was my first ever  International Draughts appearance and as a result, I lost my first game owing to lack of confidence,  Sheikh explained,

which he added has given him extra pressure to recover and he was succeeded in recovering from a poor start as he turned out in a dramatic fashion to put up a historic performances against the grand masters which earned him a place in the draughts world cup.
