According to latest reports from the North Bank Region, (NBR) as many as 1063 houses had collapsed within the area due to heavy downpour.

A report prepared by the Regional Disaster Committee of the region, states that as of 15th August 2009, a total of 1063 houses had collapsed across the region.

An assessment carried out by the Regional Disaster Committee revealed that 114 villages, out of the 336 villages in the region, were badly affected by the disaster.

The report also stated that 958 households, 2780 people were also affected, while a total of 1063 houses completely collapsed, and 1653 partially collapsed.

According to the report, two giant baobab trees fell on a building in Farafenni, in Upper Badibu District and Amdallai Village in Lower Niumi District, but there was no report of any causality.

It added that 153 family members, who are currently taking a temporary shelter with neighbours, were made homeless. 

Recent floods have gripped most part of the country.

According to statistics, in the Western Region, up to 233 compounds with about 2060 households were affected across the region, rendering a good number of people homeless.

In Kanifing Municipality, 1101 houses, 2724 families were said to be affected, while 525 people were made homeless.

According to Essa Khan, the Executive Director of National Disaster Management Agency, close to 12, 000 people have one way or the other been struck by disaster in the country, adding that the tendency is that the final figure may far exceeds the current estimates.
