Sizzla Kalonji,the internationally renowned reggae super star of our time, alongside his accompanied artists and the world of music promoters from Jamaica, last Thursday December 25th rocked the prestigious and spectacular Independence stadium in Bakau with their musical system.
The somewhat rare musical performance on the football pitch of the Independence stadium was part of the three main segments of musical show line up for the Jamaican artists, scheduled for the 25th,27th and 29th December 2008 respectively. The showbiz witnessed a heated,intelligent,creative and talented performances staged by the famous Rebel T.Music promotions,Princess Menen and Jesse Jendah as well as other sprouting Gambian artists such as Fireman among others.
The Jamaican delegates did not hide what they called deeper sense of love and respect for the Gambia and her peace loving and hospitable people. They did their best on the stage by thrilling and entertaining their eager and awaited audience to maximum rate in the world of musical entertainment.
The night long reggae music performance was characterised by high spirited singing and dance coupled with philosophical and other related prophetic words in line with the world of reggae music.Reggae music is known for its prophetic and philosophical words, especially by Bob Marley who was considered the father of reggae music.
Princess Menen,the Ghanian born USA based reggae super star, could be heard in one of her songs urging people of the world to desist from what she called crocodile smile or smiles in our midst and filled our hearts and minds with love, honesty, peace and the spirit of unity.According to her the world cannot progress in the absence of these noble and cherished human virtures.
Jesse Jendah,was not also left behind in his spirited prophetic and Rastafarian philosophical words, contained in his musical lyrics. Sizzla Kalonji,the artist of the night,took the centre stage and greeted with musical chants with the words ‘more fire’ in the air as psychological energiser.
This fire was interpreted to maen, prophetic and other related philosophical words from Sizzla Kalonji as well as carnabis smokes and lighter lit by the audience as a sign of their appreciation for the night long exclusive reggae performance.
The Jamaican delegates and the artist of the night did exactly what was expected of them,especially Sizzla Kalonji,who paid a special tribute to the Gambian leader Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.Sizzla Kalonji described President Jammeh as a man of peace filled with a sense of vision for the Gambia and her people.
He cited the president”s back to the land call as extremely wonderful and a step in the right direction, worthy of emulation by all Gambians. According to Sizzla Kalonji, Africans have to learn the art of self reliance,especially on food production for sustainable food sufficiency amidst surge in the global food and other related prices. Sizzla Kalonji,defended President Jammeh’s back to the land calls with strong terms in his music and called on Gambians and Africans in particular to eat what they produce in order to avoid heavy reliance on imported food items from the west at high cost.
The night-long reggae music show was described by many as one of the best showbiz in the history of the Gambia, despite the high cost of entrance requirement which at first seems to deter many from entry onto the football lawn of the Independence stadium.
