Boys are born, but men are made. One of the most tragic events in life is to be born a child and remain a child till death.
Most men have grown up, but are still reckoned with as boys drawing from their life accomplishments. The first man, Adam in the Bible failed because he was created an adult. That was why the second Adam (Jesus) came as a child. The Bible says, “And the child grew…” – Luke 2:40.
In life today we have two classes of people: Adult babies, and Young adults. What turns a baby into an adult is growth; and growth itself is a result of series of changes, whether physiologically, psychologically, environmentally, etc. The keyword here is change! What makes a man is change.
Nothing is as permanent in life as change. Nothing is as constant as change. Change is natural to existence and common to creation. In life there are three types of changes: those that happen to us, those that happen around us, and those we make happen.
As there are three types of changes, there are also three types of people in the world: those that watch things happen, those that make things happen, and those who ask, ‘what happened?”
There are also generally five types of responses to change: you can resist change, you can prepare for change, you can despise or ignore change, you can accept and adjust to change, or you can initiate and manage change.
One of the greatest tragedies in life is that only a small percentage of the world’s population confronts change effectively. Many are victims of change. Some dread change while others refuse to accept change.
This is a formula for frustration and depression. Time and change are inescapable. No matter where you live, no matter what your race or ethnicity is, no matter your language, no matter your attitude or disposition, eventually time and change will affect you.
Out of all the conditions in the earth, time and change are the most difficult to control. Time ages us, which causes our bodies to grow older and weaker with each passing year. We try to combat the aging process by dying our hair, wearing false teeth, and applying cosmetics to conceal our wrinkles.
We do these things to preserve ourselves from the effects of time. Alas! Time keeps moving. Time always produces change in some form. The most inevitable aspect of life is change, and nothing in life is as constant as change. All you can do in relation to change is prepare for it, plan for it, submit to it, manage it, and adjust to it.
Time ultimately brings about change, and change always requires a response. A passive response doesn’t react to change. An inquisitive response asks what happened but doesn’t try to alter the quality or degree of change. A pro-active response makes things happen. Which are you?
It’s not what happens to you that matters; it’s how you respond to those events that matters. God wants you to prepare for change. Change will always happen whether you approve or disapprove of it. What you do with change therefore determines whether you grow into a total man or remain an adult baby.
One Bible way of not becoming a victim of change is the discovery of purpose. Purpose is power! Energy is released when you have a clear-cut, well-defined destination.
All wonder-men are men of purpose (Joel 2:2-10).
The first question of every traveller is, “where am I going?” So many people have passed through life without discovering why they were given life. You were not created to roam about. You were curiously designed for a place.
Jesus had only one purpose for coming into the world (John 18:37). One dream is more than enough to establish your boom in life. Just discover it, and fully identify with it.
Our world is the dreamers’ world. Without a dream you’ll be doomed.
Discovering your purpose in life is therefore the valid foundation for manhood. When you discover purpose, catch it, believe it, understand it, pursue it and persist until you enter into your promised land.
