Ms Sirra Horeja Ndow, the Programme Analysis, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has stated that the UNDP is committed to supporting all national efforts to stop the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Ms Ndow, who was speaking at the opening of a two-day sub-regional forum on the cluster meeting of NATCOM recently held at Jerma Beach Hotel, stated that UNDP will continue to join forces and unite with other stakeholders to achieve this vital objective.

She further noted that the UNDP highly values this partnership and is highly committed to the promotion of good governance and the maintenance of peace and stability in the sub-region.

According to her, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons is a serious threat to peace, stability and security, noting that it is a prerequisite for development and prosperity. She underscored the importance of the initiative, which she added, is initiative geared towards better regulation, control and management of small arms and light weapons in West Africa by ECOWAS member countries, UNDP, CSO and other donors.

Ms Ndow noted that the call for collective culture of peace and security would no doubt enhance sustainable development and create the enabling environment for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in the sub-region.
