UTG Enters Active Collaboration with Ling Tung University

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Ling Tung University of Taiwan and the University of The Gambia is an indication of the latter’s readiness to move up and ahead in academia where research, teaching and community are the defining characteristics. And the recently signed MOU seeks to give a boost to all these areas.

Under the MOU, both universities will exchange books, periodicals, student work and educational data to enable teachers to improve their expertise. In addition, there will be exchange visits between students and faculties of both universities, with a view to promoting strong cultural ties. As well as providing management training for administrative staff and supporting the UTG with professors, Ling Tung University will also award three UTG female students scholarsips to do MBA programmes at the university.

The MBA scholarship is particularly important because it will inspire the female students to exert themselves so that they will be deserving of the honour.  Ambitious female students would therefore be wise to take advantage of this golden opportunity to advance their careers. It is also important that administrative staff members of the UTG are sent on training to update their skills to ensure that the university is run with greater efficiency. Getting UTG undergraduate exposed to Taiwanese professors would also broaden their horizons, as it would make the UTG much more multicultural.

The issue of books is non-negotiable. A university’s worth is measured by the size and quality of its library or libraries, as the case may be. Both parties should ensure that the UTG Library is stocked with good and suitable books. Where the library is rich, teaching and research will be effective, even proactive. And this will inevitably lead to better community service.

The UTG exists to serve the needs of society. It is therefore important that it builds strategic alliances that will help it achieve this worthwhile end. This MOU is one such step. The success or failure of the MOU will depend on the dedication, diligence and discipline of both parties. Considering the particular usefulness of the MOU to the UTG, the administration of the UTG should spare no effort to ensure its success within the next five years. It is a pact that promises a bright future for the University of The Gambia , and by extension the Gambian society.

“Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.”

Chesterton, G.K.
