Following his plea of guilty to charges of stealing mobile phone and NAWEC cables, one Yaya Njie was on 7th January 2009 convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour.

The sentences were administered by Principal Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court.

In his mitigation the convict Yaya Njie told the court that he was a first offender and urged the court to temper justice with mercy. He said he also had been in remand for three months.

In a separate development the Gambia Arab Islamic Bank theft case involving one Fatou Jassey-Colley, a cashier with the said bank, could not proceed at the Bundung Magistrates’ Court recently.

When the case was called, the defence counsel of the accused person, Lawyer pap Cheyassin Secka. told the court that he was not served with the charge sheet by the prosecution. The case was adjourned to 19th January 2009.
