GAA Votes for Continuity![]() Thursday, September 21, 2006 The Gambia Athletic Association [GAA] last Saturday voted for continuity by retaining the majority of the outgoing executive committee members in their quadrennial congress held at the Friendship Hotel Independence Stadium, Bakau.
The congress was attended by the eight Athletics clubs affiliated to the Association namely Mass Sosseh, KMC, Elite Athletic Clubs, Amdalaye, Gamstar, Fajara Flyers Fire Ambulance services, Police and Prisons departments and the Gambia Armed Forces. At the end of the deliberation Fred Lloyd Evans was re-elected President, Bai Ndongo Faal, a new comer, was elected First Vice president while Edrissa Njie (Chico), the then First Vice President was elected as Second Vice President. Alh Dodou Joof alias Capi was unanimously retained as Secretary General, Alieu Cham as his Assistant. Alh Samba Mbye and Badou Jasseh were also retained as Treasurer and Auditor respectively. Aja Amira Jagne, Mustapha Gibba and Badou Ndowe were maintained as other members of the executive while Ousman Jallow, Musa Manneh and Ebrima Tiyana are the new comers in that category. In presenting his report to the delegates, Fred Lloyd Evans reported that the period under review has been very successful with Gambian Athletes being prominent in the regional, Sub regional and continental competitions. “The President and Secretary General of the GAA are very much involve in the administration of the African Athletics Confederation (CAA) as Council member and Treasurer of the Continental body respectively in which we took active part in the administration and management of the council” he said. In his activity report the Secretary General of GAA Dodou Joof stated the Gambia won 83 gold medals, 63 Silver and 54 Bronze from regional and sub regional competitions in the past four years. He added that the Gambia also won Continental Senior and Junior medals, and reached the Semi finals of the Senior and Junior Championship including the Olympic games. He said the GAA continued to improve their relationship with schools at all levels by assisting them in training and organising athletics competitions and providing technical back up to them. He pointed out that the progress made by the Athletes at the school level is been monitored by GAA for possible inclusion in to the national Team Alh Samba Mbye, Treasurer of the GAA, said that the Association received a subvention of D356, 463.00 from the International Federation of Athletic Association (IAAF) and spent D334, 178.75 on the activities concerning the Association Other Speakers at the occasion include Mr. George Gomez, executive Secretary of GNOC, who described the GAA as one of the most successful sporting Associations in the Country. Lamina Sanneh of the National Sports Council and other dignitaries also made similar sentiments The occasion was attended by a cross section of members of the sporting fraternity.
