Nawettan round up Jazz are Bakau champions

Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Jazz FC on Sunday, beat Katchically United in a post-match penalty shoot-out to claim the Bakau Western Union sponsored league cup title. The two sides drew 2-2 during the regulatory period, before Jazz prevailed in a heated spot kick contest to land their first-ever league title in many years.

Both Jazz and Katchically United emerged from the same group and it was Jazz who prevailed with a 2-1 victory in their group meeting. However, the Katchically side were not bothered by that defeat which only came after they (Katchically) had already qualified for the quarter-final stages.

But with both sides needing to write their names on the league winners’ list for the first time, Sunday’s final was a make-or-break cracker for both sides and eventually, Jazz renewed their supremacy over the young Katchically side.

As champions, Jazz received a giant trophy and a cash prize of D15,000 while Katchically received a cash prize of D10,000.

The Bakau knock-out title winner will be decided today when Scan Tours square-up against FC Banda at the Bakau mini-stadium.

Manchester rule Old Yundum

As champions, Manchester received a giant trophy and a cash prize of D2500 (two thousand five hundred dalasis), while Sonko Jileng consoled themselves with D1,500 (one thousand five hundred dalasis).

The Most Disciplined Team Award, which commands a cash prize of D500 (five hundred dalasis), went to Talibi FC.

The 9-team nawettan tournament was organised by the Old Yundum Youth and Sports Association, and the organisers hailed the participating teams for their high level of discipline which ensured a violent-free and successful nawettan season.

Macassa prevail at SK East

Unlike other finals in other zones where a post -match penalty was introduced to decide the winner, Macassa took their game in their own hands after scoring two goals with no reply.

The champions were decorated with a giant trophy and a substantive cash amount of D25,000, while disappointed Milan received D15,000.
