Inter-zonal athletic championship soon

Saturday, August 25, 2007

Preparations are in high gears to stage the second edition of the annual Inter-zonal Athletic Championship.
The zonal representatives that form the organising committee met yesterday, and have agreed to hold the championship in September, with the exact date to be made known in due course.
Modou Demba, Development Officer of the Gambia National Olympic Committee and member of the Organising Committee, said all the zones within the Greater Banjul Area are expected to participate in the championship that will feature eight sporting disciplines for both male and female categories.

On why the need to organise a Zonal Championship, Demba said over the past years, the zonal sporting associations have been concentrating on only one sporting discipline - nawettan football.  “It is against this background that the National Olympic Committee deems it necessary to stage competitions that will feature athletics and other disciplines.”
“We had the maiden edition last year and we envisaged that this will encourage the zones to diversify their activities and look at other sporting disciplines.”

While commending Trust Bank, Gamtel and Africell for throwing their weights behind the initiative, Demba called on other donors to help boost-up the initiative.
It could be recollected that the eight zones within the Greater Banjul Area and beyond, including Serrekunda East, Serrekunda West, Sukuta, Lamin, Bakau, and Brikama, participated in the last year’s maiden edition before Serekunda East emerged Champions.
