James Hayward, a Britist philantropist, donated, on Wednesday 2nd January 2008,  educational materials to Bakau Lower  Basic School at a ceremony held at the school premises. The donated items include packets of pens, pencils, crayons, and sport jerseys among others.

According to the initiators, the gesture is geared towards helping the school to realise its dreams.

In receiving the materials, Alhagi Dukureh, headmaster of Bakau Lower Basic School, thanked the philantropist for their humanitarian gesture and the timely intervention, noting that the materials will be used wisely to benefit the most needy children.

He further gave a historical background of the school, which he said, was built in 1947 during the colonial era. He revealed that he, himself started his educational career at the school. In those days, parents didn’t appreciate the real value of education, he said.

Mr Dukureh further added that when he took over as headmaster, he found the school facing a lot of constraints. He then noted that, with the support given by the government and the collective efforts of his staff, they were able to attain some of their goals.

He acknowledged the fact that donations made by  philantropists continue to have a positive impact on the school. He outlined that the problems the school is currently undergoing revolve around lack of enough toilets and furniture.

With a high  concentration of pupils (1550), the availability of enough toilets and furniture will impact on the welfare of the children. He finally commended Basiru Gassama of Sun Beach Hotel for being instrumental in facilitating the donation.

James Hardward, a teacher from Parkfield High School, Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom, expressed optimism that the donated items will help to create a link between the two institutions and that more donations will be delivered to the school in the near future. The philanthropist was  accompanied by his family members.

In his  statement, Basiru Gassama,  a staff of Sun Beach Hotel, thanked the donors for their humanitarian gesture, urging the headmaster to make good use of the materials.

Basiru Gassama also took the opportunity to lead a tour around the school. The visitors then witnessed the wonderful job initiated by Basiru Gassama to embark on a massive cleansing exercise.

Elaborating on this Set- Settal, Basiru Gassama  expressed gratitude to the tourist guides and the students for  showing commitment to creating a healthy environment within Bakau Lower Basic School.
