U-17 team in camp...ahead of Senegal match![]() Thursday, September 21, 2006 Barely two weeks when the national U-23 went to camp, ahead of their Olympic qualifier fixture against Egypt, has the national U-17 team also been camped at the Technical Training Centre in Yundum, ahead of their encounter against the neighbouring Senegal in the first leg encounter of the CAF U-17 qualifier match.
Alhagi Sarr, the head care-taker coach of the team told Observer Sports that 28 players are currently in camp, as preparation intensifies, ahead of the encounter, slated for 15th, and 17th weekend of September, 2006.
Senegal will be the first to travel to Banjul before the return leg comes underway in Dakar from 13th to 15th weekend of October, 2006.
According to coach Alhagi Sarr, the 28 players will be reduced to 25 players today (Friday), adding that further screening will be done in two weeks time so as to trim the team to a 22-man squad for the proper match.
As defending champions, The Gambia did not take part in the preliminary matches, but were reserved to take on the winner in Senegal/Liberia match. The latter’s failure to turn up for the game in Dakar, earned Senegal an automatic qualification to face The Gambia.
The winners in the home-and-away games will face either Tunisia, Mauritania or Algeria before qualifying for the CAF U-17 final in Togo in 2007.
