53 NAMs to be sworn-in today

Forty-eight elected National Assembly (NAMs) and five nominated others, will this morning, be sworn-in at the National Assembly Chambers, in Banjul.

The swearing in ceremony will mark the beginning of the third legislature under the second republic.

Chief Justice Abdou Karim Savage is expected to preside over the inaugural session, which would be attended by Secretaries of State and several other dignitaries.

Today’s inaugural session would also witness the election of a new speaker and deputy speaker of the Assembly. Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, former nominated member of the National Assembly, has been nominated already by President Yahya Jammeh, who is also the leader of the governing APRC party, to head the house.
