Unicef: Ebo Town is cholera-free

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
Over a year ago, Ebo Town, a ward in Serrekunda with a population of about 40,000, was struck by cholera, water borne disease, resulting in the hospitilisation of many residents in the area.
Children were the worst hit by the disease as they are the most vulnerable to the pandemic. But this was arrested when Unicef intervened, providing safe-drinking water for the community, through its ‘WASH’ project.

According to a release issued by Unicef Banjul Office in observance of World Water Day, which was observed yesterday, the project is implemented through a number of government departments that work with local communities to build latrines and chlorinate unprotected open wells.

The project also installs water taps for town residents and embarks on house -to-house water hygiene education and promotion.

The ‘WASH’ project in Ebo Town, the release added, decreases the risk of cholera and lessens the intensity of any outbreak. The project also promotes long-term measures to reduce all forms of diarrhoeal diseases.
