YATAM Handed Dustbins to Bansang Community

Youths Against Tuberculosis And Malaria (YATAM) gave 30 dustbins to the Community of Bansang in a ceremony held over the weekend in Bansang, Upper Fulladu District, CRR South.

In his handing over remarks the Chairman of YATAM, Mr. Ansumana Colley said YATAM is a young organisation and needs support. He said that since its inception last year they have made huge achievements ranging from filling potholes during the rainy season, weekly cleansing exercises, mosquito net dipping, taking part in the Measles Campaign and conducting an Environmental Campaign within and around the area.

According to Mr. Colley, the ultimate aim of YATAM is for everyone to be Tuberculosis and Malaria free and live healthily in a healthy environment. Mr. Colley further pointed out the importance of the dustbins in the crusade to create a clean environment. He urged the community to make the best use of the dustbins and see them as theirs.

Mr. Colley appealed to NGOs, the Government, philanthropists and well wishers to support YATAM with office equipment.

The Alkalo of Bansang Kebba Kora thanked YATAM for their good initiative adding that the importance of health cannot be over emphasised. He said the dustbins will help to keep the environment clean and tidy. He urged YATAM to keep up the good work and try to work together for the benefit of healthy living. He appealed to the Area Council and YATAM to work hand in glove in the area of refuse collection and disposal.

For his part the regional health officer, Mr. Karanba Keita thanked and commended YATAM for the good start, adding that starting is always difficult but with the aim you always succeed. He also assured YATAM of his office supports, “My office door is always open to support you”.

Among other speakers included Mr. Babucarr Joof, the Public Health Officer who said that as human beings we generate rubbish but the most important thing is managing and controlling the waste so that we don’t pollute our environment or create health hazards. He added that the collection and disposal of refuse from residential areas must be an ongoing thing.

The representatives from the health team, Mr. Musa Camara and Manyo Kandeh dwelt on the effects, causes and prevention methods of malaria and tuberculosis.

Mariama S. Ceesay, Member of YATAM gave the vote of thanks and Kebba Susso, the Secretary of YATAM, chaired the ceremony.
