Private Convoy Urged to Obtain Police Clearance![]() Tuesday, January 16, 2007 Any person(s) wishing to travel in a private convoy should apply to the Office of the Inspector General of Police for Clearance and Police Escort, a press release from the Office of the IGP has said.
This action has been prompted by the fact that the Office of the Inspector General of Police has observed with great concern and dismay the gross disregard to Road Safety measures by private convoys and other motorists using the highways especially during marriage or wedding ceremonies, said the release sent on Friday to this paper. “These convoys and motorists carry or allow their passengers to be carried in such manner that is likely to endanger their lives and the lives of other road users,” the release stated, adding that they also harass other road users and disrupt the smooth and orderly flow of traffic. It continued: “The practice is not only a contravention of the Road Traffic Regulations, but also a danger to Public Health and Safety, and should therefore cease with immediate effect. “Consequently to the above, and with immediate effect, the Police will now provide escort at a minimal cost to private convoys using our highways.” The general public should therefore take note and comply accordingly to avoid embarrassment, the release concluded.
