Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH), over the weekend held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), at a gathering held at the Brikama Youth Centre in Western Region.

The meeting amongst other things was meant to discuss the past activities of the association, its financial statues as well as the future of the association.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Abdoulie Njie, the outgoing president of GADHOH said the Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a charitable organization working for the creation of a society in which the deaf and hard of hearing participate fully as citizens of the nation and enjoy all the benefits of such citizenship on fair and equal basis. According to Mr. Njie, the association over the years has made significant improvements on the lives of its members in the Gambia.

In his presentation on the report of the activities of the association for the year ending 2006, Mr. Dodou Loum, Executive Director of the Gambia Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (GADHOH) said the annual general meeting is very significant in that, “this is a day where important issues affecting the members and as well as future plans and activities are addressed, while at the same time, resolutions and recommendations on those issues are set up and finalized for future planning.

Over viewing the activity report of the year ending 2006, he said, Capacity building in sign languages for teachers has been conducted over the years to facilitate communications between the deaf and hard of hearing in order to bring sense to them through the language of signs. “Sign languages are very important to deaf people since it is the first step to look at before addressing issues affecting them” he said.
He further said that the issue of attending school, while others are in the office facility was also put in place by the association with a transport meant to facilitate the branches that have been put in three regions of the country which are Barra, Farafenni and Soma. This he said is meant to create an inter-regional integration in the Gambia. Mr. Loum further added that, efforts are also being made in other regions of the country to establish such integration.

Speaking earlier, Parthia Soathin Saho, Country Volimitary Service Overseas (VSO), said their organisation is working with the Gambia VSO to promote the livelihood of the disabled so as to integrate them in the national development process. According to him, the VSO made a strategic commitment to support the disabled and to facilitate the creation of a steering committee, comprising of 9 DOPs, thereby identifying the overall directions and goals of the disability programme.

Amadou Touray of Gamtel who was decorated by the members of the association as its honourary life president delivered the vote of thanks.
