Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Ms Mariama Jaw, the last councilor for Basse Ward, has been selected by the APRC Regional Executive Committee of Upper River Region (URR) to run for the Chairmanship of the forthcoming council elections. The committee, headed by the Governor of the region, Omar Khan, selected the former councilor to contest under the APRC ticket in the forthcoming Local Government election slated for January 24th 2008.

This paper can also confirm that Mr. Jewru Krubally, alias Old Pa, a former member of the defunct July 22nd movement, had applied for the post but later voluntarily stepped down in deference of Mariama Jaw’s bid.
Speaking to this reporter, Ms Mariama Jaw, a stalwart of the APRC party, told this paper that if elected she would improve the standard of living of the people of URR. According to Mariama Jaw, her first priority would be to work hand in hand with the youth of the region, who he described as the backbone of any country’s human resources.

“I will rehabilitate all feeder roads, link them to highways in the region, provide uniforms and boots for council cleansing service workers and dig pit latrines at all Lumo locations in the Upper River Region,” she said. According to Ms Jaw, if the people of URR elect her into office, she would ensure that the council is development-oriented and responsive to some of the needs and aspirations concerning the development of the Upper River Region.

The final approval for Ms Jaw’s APRC candidature for Basse Area Council would come from President Jammeh.
