On December 23, 2007, Basse will host the 21st edition of Safra, a sub-regional event that features 6 countries from the Zone II.
The week- long annual event will be filled with series of sporting activities; cultural demonstrations and symposium, and is to end December 30.
This year’s event is expected to attract over 1,300 delegates drawn from participating countries namely; Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Mauritania, Mali, and The Gambia which has always been represented by Basse.
Mr Omar Khan, Governor of Upper River Region, has informed Pointsport that preparations for the forthcoming event are in high gear. He added that the Region is also seeking assistance from government, Parastatals, NGOs and individuals to make the weeklong event a sparkling success.
Governor Khan commended the Department of State for Youth and Sports and the Business community within and outside URR for responding promptly to their call.
Safra is a sub-regional programme at grassroots level between major towns sharing borders in the Zone II countries, and which came into being in the 1980s.
Basse successfully hosted the event in 1997.
