Lamin Jarjus impersonation case gets tough

Friday, June 8, 2007

The impersonation case involving Lamin Jarju of Lamin Village in Kombo North was on Monday called before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate EF Mbaye. In the last sitting the case was adjourned after the testimony of two prosecution witnesses, Alhagie Demba Sanyang Chief of Kombo North and Sereign Modou Joof BA, a public relations officer.

In this sitting however, ASP Yerro SS Baldeh, Chief of Operations for Western Region, attached to the Brikama Police Station and the third prosecution witness testified in the court on the case.

He asserted that he recognised the accused when a complaint was lodged at Yundum Police Station that the accused was disguising himself as the Alkalo of Babylon.

Mr. Baldeh continued to testify that when police officers (including himself) went to the accused’s home, they explained their mission to him and he was later picked up and taken to the police station. He said that he told the accused to go along with all his documents for justification. Among them a stamp was found in his possession which he used to identify himself as an Alkalo.

According to his testimony, a land transfer document was also found in his possession. The stamp was marked and tendered as an exhibit.

However, in this sitting, the prosecution witness ASP Baldeh was told by the defence counsel that the land transfer document and the stamp were produced by the Brikama Area Council for the accused and not produced by the accused himself.

When asked by the defence counsel whether Alkalos are paid monthly salaries, he answered that he thought they are paid that way.

The defence counsel revealed that Alkalos are community leaders not civil servants.

“In the interest of justice,” the defence counsel said “I would like to apply that the police produce the said land transfer document,” he said.

But the prosecution witness objected that he did not have them at hand.

The case was then adjourned to Tuesday, June 19 for continuation.

Police prosecutor 413 Sanyang stood for the IGP.
