Customer Care Lacks In Most Filling Stations in The Gambia

Some stations Pump Attendants in the Gambia, do not have proper care for their numerous customers who provide employment for them. When a customer drove in to buy any product especially at a time when there is shortage of fuel, most attendants rather sit down watching the desperate customers without telling them that they are out of fuel. Some even will shout at them by telling them “we do not have”!

This I think is not the way. I guess before employing any worker in to such public place, they should be trained and taught simple public relations (PR) in that way they will be able to treat customers in a much better way.

A good or qualify Pump Attendant should have the following qualities in him or her in order to serve the people better.

  • They should always stand on the pump island
  • Guide the customer as soon as he or she enters the station
  • Always put up a friendly face.
  • You should have a well groomed appearance and wear a full neat uniform.
  • You should not eat or drink in front of the customers
  • You should immediately serve the first customer that arrives.

It is rather unfortunate that you can hardly find any of the above in most of them. They rather do things in the opposite, than act professionally. This is mostly done by   ladies, and after all they cheat the customers by not supplying them the requested amount of fuel that matches the money paid. They also used to strike deals with some drivers to steal fuel. This attitude can lead to the collapse of station.

When this happens, the station owners who put in money to make business, will be the losers, the person responsible for the lost will go and find another job. My dear readers, is it fair to do this? There is a proverb in Wolof which says “fotakey Nakebi Fofula lekeyy” which means where you tied the cow, that is where it is going to feed, but it should have a limit.
