At least 170 horses and donkeys recently lined up for a horse and donkey show held at Chamen Nianija CRR North. The programme was organised by the Gambia Horse and Donkey Project.

Speaking at the event the Director of Gambia Horse and Donkey Project (GHD), Mrs. Heather Brewer, said the aim of the show was to encourage farmers and others to take good care of their animals. Mrs. Brewer told those gathered that the association was founded in 2003. Highlighting some of the organisation’s achievements she noted that a lot of Gambian youths in the area (Sambel Kunda) were trained in how to take good care of animals.

For her part, Mrs. Stella Brewer, one of the founders of GHD, said the association is out to tackle poverty in The Gambia particularly in the provinces. She revealed that the association donated over 200 donkeys and some farming tools to needy farmers in order to boost crop production and end the scourge of poor food security.

Presenting the trophy and cash prize to the winner of the best horse category, Alasan David Cham, the Sayfo of Nianija district, thanked the winners and urged them to maintain their positions and to learn lessons from their mistakes.

Mr. Alhajie Jallow’s horse won first prize in the horse category and Mr. Ousainai Ceesay’s animal won the top prize in the donkey section. In total, cash prizes were given to over 24 winners.

The Manager of GHD Mr. Modou Chan, also spoke positively of the groups work saying that with their help and support farmers are now taking good care of their animals.
