Contemporary arts on the stageFriday, December 08, 2006 Cultural activities will get a real boost with the forthcoming exhibition for contemporay arts in The Gambia scheduled from 20th to December 26th, 2006.
Mamadou Diakhate, a renown Senegalese artist and philosopher based in Germany, will see his main works hold an exposition at Safari Garden Hotel, Fajara. This large public event will, for the first time in The Gambia, be combined with contemporary dance truly inspired by Mamadou Diakhate’s major paintings. For Iris Walton, a theatre and performance director from United Kingdom (U.K) and who also doubles as a Lecturer in drama at the University of the Gambia, the said event will bring contemporary arts at the centre stage of the cultural activities in the country, adding that Joe Buzansi and his dance troup will also be featured at the Alliance Franco - Gambienne (AFG) from December 21st to 23rd, 2006. Sparking with considerable passion on this program, she said that the exhibition will also help to bring together indivudual artists, as well as students, in order to prospect new areas to develop dance and performance choregraphy, based essentially on the art of Mamadou Diakhate. Max Diene, an artist from Dakar, and who is co-organising the program with Iris Walton, the artistic event is meant to put one of the greatest African painter in the forefront. He also pointed out the event will not only highlight, but give room to creativity by providing inspiration to create and choregraph a new dance performance with Gambian and Senegalese dancers. He expressed hope that the public will turnout massively and enjoy what is supposed to be a great moment of art in the Gambia.
