Despite the sustained efforts by the authorities in The Gambia, Spain and other countries to stem the tide of illegal migration, the number of able-bodied, young Gambians embarking on the adventurous journey to Europe is showing no sign of abating.

But to Famang Darboe, Administrative and Marketing Officer with the International Business College in Fajara, the time has now come for the Gambian youths to make a sober reflection, look around themselves and take favourable advantage of the numerous facilities and opportunities that ‘exist’ in the country.

Born in Niamina Dankunku in the Central River Region of The Gambia, Famang was also among those Gambian youths who had intangible fears about their future. He has braved the deserts, the high seas and forests in a determined effort to travel to Europe. But, luck, as it is often said, smiles more on some than it does on others.

Just as he was about to celebrate his ‘triumphal’ entry into Malta, Italy, in 2003, Famang was apprehended by the Italian authorities, declared as an illegal immigrant and sent back to his port of embarkation - Morocco. But today, he is juggling a successful career with a sweet conjugal relationship.

What and who must have been responsible for the dramatic and positive transformation of Famang’s life? Well, to Famang, if the herb that we seek in the forest grows at our backyards, then we’ll be saved the journey.

In this exclusive interview with Youth Forum, Famang recalled how he began to notice positive signs of change in his life when he came into contact with the International Business College in 2003.
