D5m School project for Gunjur

The foundation stone for a five million dalasi school project was on Friday, April 4th laid in Gunjur, Kombo South, Western Region. The project, sponsored by the German Charity Futura, Frankfurt is aimed at helping the youths of The Gambia. The school is expected to commence operations next year.

Speaking at the project site, Harmut Zippan, Vice President of the foundation said five hundred pupils between the ages of 8 and 14 would receive basic education and skills training in such fields as carpentry, metal and steel fabrications as well as first aid treatment among others. This according to him is to complement government’s efforts in providing basic and secondary education to Gambian youths, thereby creating room for self employment. He added that health as well as other sectors would be given a boost.

For his part, Lamin Darboe, a native of Gunjur based in Germany and also the project initiator and manager described nation building as a collective responsibility. He added that the skills that are going to be acquired in this initiative will create job opportunities and give youths the chance to contribute effectively to national development.
Darboe also commended the government of The Gambia for creating the conducive environment and urged Gambians both at home and abroad to invest in socio-economic development projects.

Alhagie Seban Cham, on behalf of the community of Gunjur commended the German charity for initiating this project in Gunjur. He urged the members of the community to embrace and give education projects the support they deserve.
Other speakers at the occasion included the project’s security officers, Mama Njie and Fansu Darboe who also expressed hope that the project would attain its objectives.
The ceremony was attended by a cross section of the community.
