Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Barely one year into the trial at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court of Lamin Fatty, a former Independent newspaper reporter, for allegedly making false publication contrary to the laws of The Gambia, judgement is expected to be delivered today by Magistrate Buba Jawo.

Mr. Fatty was first arrested and detained shortly after March 21st abortive coup last year and subsequently taken to court. The trial, first heard by Mr. Kebba Sanyang, now Secretary of State for Justice and Attorney-General, heard testimonies from both the prosecution and defence teams.

Today’s session is expected to be witnessed by members of the media fraternity, friends and family members of Mr. Fatty.

Readers could recall that this judgement comes against the backdrop of another trial involving a US-based Gambian journalist, Fatou Jaw Manneh, who is currently standing trial for sedition before the same magistrate.
