GAT on the move

The Gender Action Team (GAT), under the unbrella of the African Centre For Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), recently held a one day meeting at its  conference hall in Kerr Serign.

The agenda of the meeting, among other things, was meant to critically look at the  (GAT) draft constitution and to come up with necessary comments or recommendations in a bid to adopt the document and operationalised it without further delay.

In her welcoming remarks, Ms Yvette Phillott, who deputised for the ACDHRS Executive, Director Mrs Hannah Forster, explained that the GAT, which had been dormant for a while, had not been responding to the task it set itself at inception.

In response to these comments, some members expressed concern over the fact that GAT may be a replication of structures already existing . This issue was discussed at lenght. However, the founding members of GAT explain circumstances that lead to the establishment of GAT. Soon, it was agreed that since there is a good number of organisation working on gender issues, GAT should aim at supporting these organisations and maintain a coordinating and monitoring role on gender related issues in the country.  This new dimension would now be reflected in the constitution.
