WANEP Organises Experience Sharing Workshop at Kairaba Hotel Today

Friday, November 30, 2007

West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) the Gambia chapter will today organize a one-day Experience Sharing workshop at the Kairaba Beach Hotel to boost a sense of ownership in the Sub-Regional Small Arms and Light Weapons project.
The workshop will include the dissemination of the project completion report and sharing of experiences from the pilot SRP-SALW.

According to organizers it is important that all sections of society –state, civil society and international institutions- feel a sense of ownership in the project.
The one-day workshop has been organized to run in three phases. The early morning session will consist of the showing of a video documentary, produced towards the end of the project, which depicts the level of interest the project has generated within the beneficiary populations.

The second session will see the presentation of the project completion report drafted by the consortium and focal points (civil society organizations). This section of the workshop will also hear eyewitness reports and benefit from contributions from the floor.

Having analyzed the report attendees will, in the final installment of the workshop, be given a presentation on the new program, based on the experiences of the SRP-SALW, and a proposal for greater intervention in the areas of human security, the fight against poverty and the mainstreaming of peace education.

It is envisaged that the new program, entitled The Sub-Regional Security and Development Program for West Africa, will contribute to consolidating gains made in the border regions of Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. Expansion to other border zones in Sierra Leone, Mali and Liberia is also being considered.
