An 11 member medical team composing seven doctors, two nurses, one pharmacist and an executive from the Republic of Taiwan arrived in the country Sunday to provide free medical care to Gambians.

The team doctors are specialists in various fields, among them a surgeon specialising in urology, one internal medicine infection specialist, one dentist, one emergency specialist, one family medicine specialist, one pharamacytian; two nurses and one executive.

In receiving the team on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Welfare Dr. Malick Njie, at a welcoming dinner held at the Ambassador residence in Kololi, the permanent Secretary of the Department Sulayman Samba welcomed the mission to The Gambia.

He expressed gratitude to the government and people of Taiwan for the gesture.

He hailed the Taiwanese government for supporting The Gambia’s health sector including the sponsorship of the Cuban medical mission, partnership between RVTH and Taichung Hospital.

According to him, the medical mobile mission would leave yesterday for Sulayman Junkung Jammeh Hospital in Bwiam where they would provide free medical care to patients there for some days before also moving to AFPRC Hospital in Farafenni for the same mission.

He hopes that in future the mission would have a permanent mission in the country.  “With H.E the President’s current visit to Taiwan we hope cooperation between the two countries will be expanded significantly”, he said.

For his part, leader of the team Dr Jeffrey Chih-Fu Chen expressed their happiness to serve the people of The Gambia.

He said that apart from the free medical care they would offer to Gambians, they would also share their experiences with their colleagues in the country. “We will do our best”. He said that they would treat patients with different cases.

Present at the dinner were Dr Adama Sallah, Chairman RVTH management board and Taiwanese Embassy staff.

Meanwhile the Taiwanese medical team will stay in the country from the 9th to 23rd December 2007.
