The Gambia Armed Force (GAF) will host the 34th West African Liason Office (WALO) General Assembly meeting from March 30 to April, 10, 2007. WALO is a sub-regional body that co-ordinates military sport in 15 West Africa countries.

The meeting will be held alongside Football and Wrestling Championship, jointly sponsored by President Jammeh and his Malian counterpart, President Amadou Tumani Toure.

This was disclosed by Lt Colonel Sanpierr Mendy, Chairman of the Organising Committee at a press briefing held at President Jammeh’s Joint Officers Mess in Kotu on Friday. He said the idea behind the press conference is to sensitise the general public about WALO and the events that are going to be held during the session.

Colonel SP Mendy revealed that the Marketing Committee for the organisation is currently engaged in soliciting funds from parastatals and private institutions, “We require the collective efforts of both the military and the civilian population “

For his part, Lt Colonel OB Mbye, Head of the Marketing Committee, thanked CFAO, Bankers Association, Nawec, Africell, Gamcel, Gamtel and Seaview, among others for their contributions towards the forthcoming event. He expressed hope that other institutions will follow suit as they are getting positive reactions from them.

The press briefing was witnessed by Captain LFK Jammeh, Head of the Football sub-committee, Capt Famara Jammeh Head of Accommodation and Feeding, Capt Solomon Jammeh, Head of Wrestling sub-Committee, Capt Lamin BO Baaji Chairman of the Sport and Publicity Committee, Abdul Aziz Willan Afric Afriq Promotion and Binta Jobe Director of Quality Control at the Gambia Tourism Authority, among others..
