The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) with support from the American Embassy in Banjul will on Wednesday, June 11, organise a three-day sensitization workshop for Legal Practitioners in The Gambia, at the Jerma Beach Hotel and Resort in Kotu .
The objective of the workshop is to sensitize legal practitioners on international instruments such as the convention against all forms of discrimination on women (CEDAW), UN Resolution 1325, as well as regional documents - The protocol on the rights of women in Africa, the solemn declaration on gender equality (SDGEA) and the protection and promotion of women’s rights.
The workshop will also have dicussions on the history of women’s rights in The Gambia and have presentations and discussions on the existing rights and experiences of Gambian women.
The opening ceremony, according to reports, will be chaired by Mr Mabbassa Fall, executive committee member of the ACDHRS. Abdou karim Savage, His Lordship, the Chief Justice of the Republic of The Gambia and the American Ambassador to The Gambia will address the gathering. The keynote address will be delivered by Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, Vice-President of the Republic of the Gambia. The Attorney General and Secretary of State for Justice, Marie Saine Fridaus, will deliver the closing address.
Reports added that resource persons will comprise individuals with vast experience in human rights and gender issues, particularly the rights of women.
