The 13th edition of the annual fundraising Marathon in Njawara village, North Bank Region, is slated to take place on Saturday August 4th, 2007.

Organised by the Njawara Youth Development Society on the theme “Race for School Furniture”, this year’s marathon aims at raising funds for the provision of school furniture for Njawara Lower Basic School.

The competition, which will feature 10km race for boys from Kerewan to Njawara and 5km from Darusalam to Njawara for female category, was introduced in the village in 1989 by a native of the village, Ebou Faye Njie.

In an interview with Pointsport yesterday, Dodou Njie, chairman of the Kombo based Njawara Youth Development Society, said the marathon race contributes a lot towards the development of the village, adding that it brings together youths of the village in various parts of the country.

According to Mr. Njie, the aim of the development society is to contribute towards the development of the village especially in the health and education sectors.

He however lamented on the constraints facing the society, noting that if the society gets all the necessary support it needs, Njawara will be one of the best village in the country.

He went on to call on government, philanthropist and the private sector to come forward and contribute toward the success of the event.

It could be recalled that in last year’s competition, Ebrima Ceesay emerged first in the male category and went home with a Gold Medal, trophy, radio cassette player and T- shirt while Mariama Jallow of Barra came out first in the female category.

She was awarded a Gold Medal, trophy, radio cassette player and T-shirt.
